I love to play the guitar. I also love Jesus Christ. However, many times I put my guitar playing right smack in the middle of my relationship with Christ. I'll spend two hours working on getting my tone just right, but how long do I spend in prayer or reading the Word? I'm telling you, there's nothing tougher than coming home from a day at school, and forcing yourself to read a chapter of the bible. But sometimes you gotta be tough with yourself.
Studies show that it takes 30 days to form a habit. So don't think that just because you've been reading your Word for four straight days that you can just take a day off. Chances are, you'll get preoccupied and your one day break will get longer, and longer, and longer. Stick with it, and in the long run, you'll not only be able to defend the faith, but also show yourself approved in God's eyes.
The bible warns us about putting other things in the front of the line while we leave God in the dust trailing behind us: it's called idolatry. In Paul's letters to the church in Corinth he describes God's feelings towards idolatry (I Corinth. 6:9-10; 8:4; 10:14 and II Corinth. 6:16-18). It doesn't make sense when you put anything before God anyway, if you come to the realization that in a matter of seconds everything you worked so hard on can come crashing to the ground. The only things that remain are God's Word and the rewards you build up for yourself in Heaven. And what could be better than those?
